Managing Risks of High Vehicle Impacts to Overpasses
Infrastructure Planning & Advisory

Hundreds of vehicle strikes to overpasses are reported each year with varying degrees of severity.  Advancements in engineering treatments for overpasses are assisting in mitigating the risk, however Austroads have identified the need for a national approach to managing the process once an overpass is struck.

This project investigates practical ways and measures to minimise the risk of high vehicle impacts to existing overpasses with low vertical clearance.

Hartecs are leading a core multidisciplinary team to undertake a comprehensive investigation using industry stakeholder consultation, integrated with academic based research, to deliver guidelines that support, inform and advance the management of overpass structures through an accessible innovate approach that includes a high-level framework supported by case studies and evidence-based reserach and best practice.

Devleopment of a comprehensive national guideline outlining practical ways and measures to minimise risk and assist asset owners and all stakeholders in the continual management of bridge strikes with practical solutions.  The team delivering this project are key members in this tender proposal and bring considerable lessons learnt and insight that will greatly benefit the engagement and analysis of over height risk for road tunnels.

Team members include Jacob Weir as Project Director, David Freer as project Manager, Tara Page as Stakeholder Consultation Lead and Hamish Mackie as researcher.
