Fairbairn Dam lies on the Nogoa River approximately 16 km southwest of Emerald in Central Queensland. The dam is a zoned rock‐fill embankment dam with a clay core and a side channel spillway. The spillway comprises a concrete lined chute with an uncontrolled ogee crest. The embankment is 823 m in length. The spillway crest and chute were constructed between 1969 and 1972 from reinforced concrete. Transverse drains were installed to facilitate under slab drainage and to assist in relieving pore pressures. The drains were constructed from earthenware pipes that were laid in a bed of gravel. Open joints between each of the pipes ensured that any water entering the gravel material is able to escape into the pipes and then out through the pipe network onto the spillway floor.
The scope of this contract included
- Replacement of the Transverse Drains
- Anchoring of the 2:1 Slope and Chute Blocks
- Installation of Continuous Reinforced Concrete Overlay Slab
