Boondooma Dam Spillway Improvement Project
Infrastructure Delivery

Boondooma Dam is located on the Boyne River (AMTD 86.7km) which is a tributary of Burnett River, approximately 22km by road from Proston.   Significant damage occurred in the spillway after two low to moderate flood events in 2010, 2011 and 2013.

The dam is a 570m long, 63m high concrete faced rockfill embankment dam and consists of a main embankment over the Boyne River and a smaller subsidiary embankment over Sandy Creek on the left abutment. Both embankments are concrete faced rockfill. The storage capacity is 204,200ml.  The damage from floods caused :

– Large scour holes in the spillway chute between the spillway crest and the ECS.

– Severe scour to the spillway chute downstream of the ECS.

Scopy of works included:

– Re-profiling of the right spillway chute wall.

– Construction of a secondary ECS (which will be referred to as Spillway Defence Structure, or SDS).

– Excavation and capping of two andesite dykes.

– Concrete lining of walls between the spillway crest and the existing ECS.

– Defensive (two) lines of passive anchors in the unlined chute between the spillway crest and the ECS.

– Installation of passive anchors in the spillway crest and apron.

– Stabilisation of the “rock wedge” near the right hand corner of the existing ECS (two alternatives have been provided for tender purposes).
